Art Deco Design has been one of the most-sought-after trends of the year. But, what is it exactly? It's one of those things we have all heard of but can't quite picture. Is it scalloped couches? Archways? Picasso? An architectural style? Truth be told, it is a little bit of all those things, but don't sweat it! We will make you an expert in no time and give you some tips to on how to incorporate the Art Deco aesthetic into your space.

So what is Art Deco?

Definition:

a popular design style of the 1920s and 1930s characterized especially by bold outlines, geometric and zigzag forms, and the use of new materials.

Huh?

Let's break it down a little more.

  • Art deco is all about the high contrast, in color, in texture, and in juxtaposition (think low backed couch in a tall space, or oversized floor lamps next to a single chair).

  • Art deco is all about dramatic spaces. Bold patterns. Bold textures. Dramatic painting and lighting effects. Patterned Floors. Textured walls. Statement wallpapers. Arched entryways or dramatic window features.

  • Art deco is all about the use of materials. The more unusual, glamorous, luxurious, or unexpected, the better. Think marble, burl wood, metallics, velvet, smoked glass.

Is it my style?

If you love the 20's, love Gatsby, or have ever thought, gosh, I love this but, is it TOO MUCH? You definitely have room for a little art deco in your space.

How do I incorporate Art Deco into my space?

Luxurious Furniture:

Rounded seating, scalloped edges, and velvet textures

Accessories:

Sculptural pieces, marble, patterned, and metallic.

Eye-catching walls:

If painting is on the table, choose oversaturated earthy tones. While you may see a range of colors in Art Deco interiors, the real heroes are pink and green.

If it isn't, wallpaper is an option: the bolder and more patterned, the better. Most Art Deco Interiors are not fully wallpapered. Choose a single wall, or create a section of a wall using panel moulding as pictured below. It is an opportunity to have fun with wallpaper in a quieter way that works. It can also be the opportunity to go as bold as you can imagine. Art Deco Design is the ultimate freedom of choice.

The easiest and most budget friendly way? Artwork. Choose a dramatic framed piece that takes up most of the wall or opt for a gallery wall with frames that are vintage, quirky, and varied in texture, size, and material.

Contrasting Layers:

If there is a solid element in your Art Deco room, contrast it with something soft. If there is a patterned cushion, pair it with something solid, as seen above, or offset it with another contrasting pattern. Something tall? Something short nearby. Juxtaposition is key.

Statement Lighting:

Go bold. Choose that light you weren't sure about but absolutely loved. An Art Deco room is the place for it! For floor lamps, think angular or long lines. For chandeliers, choose fringe, crystal, or brass. For table top lighting, choose rounded and artistic shapes. The easiest way to know if you're in the realm of art deco design? You aren't sure if it looks more like a sculptural piece or a functional home good.

Mirrors:

Geometric shapes and metallic accents are both key components in art deco design so opt for a combo piece as a centerpiece in a room.

Most importantly, have fun!
