The latest kitchen design trends in 2022

(and how to incorporate them without breaking the bank)

As 2022 peaks and rounds the corner into 2023, kitchen design trends are expected to move away from the minimalist and industrial looks of the past few years and toward a more homey and comfortable aesthetic.

This will be seen in open shelving and areas, colorful cabinetry, bold materials for hoods, backsplashes, and islands, long-lasting elements, and the kitchen as an extension of living space, taking on more elements of comfort, tranquility, and quiet sophistication. While some may mourn the loss of the sleek modern look, others will appreciate the increased functionality and livability of these new kitchens.

Kitchens will continue to become more open, with less cabinetry and more exposed shelves and surfaces. this will create a more streamlined and minimalist look, as well as making the kitchen feel like more of an extension of the living space. Kitchens are increasingly being tailored to fit the needs of the home where once they were built to fit into a given space; the result is a more free-flowing kitchen that allows for food-prep and socialization to occur simultaneously. Gone are the days of women slaving away in a hot, enclosed space, while the men drink in the living room, and isn't it about time?

Colorful cabinets will continue to increase in popularity, especially in highly pigmented and bold shades like turquoise, yellow, coral. jade green, and blue. These pops of color can really brighten up a space and add personality.

Materials like marble, concrete, and butcher block will continue to be popular for countertops, backsplashes, and islands. they are all long-lasting materials that can add a touch of luxury or rustic charm to any kitchen.

But we know how intimidating a full kitchen remodel can be. Instead, there are a few ways to update your kitchen without breaking the budget. Try replacing only the countertops. This is especially accessible in a small kitchen, and can make your kitchen feel like an entirely new space. Add in a bright or textured backsplash, either above all the counters, or in a single area to add a visual element; behind the stove, the back of the island, or above the sink between two rows of cabinets or shelving. Lastly, incorporate a statement item into your kitchen! Pendant lighting or a statement hood will add in a dose of luxury that will elevate the entire kitchen.

Perhaps most significantly, the trend of the kitchen as a space for relaxation and comfort will continue to grow, both in 2022 and in the years to come. This means that we will see more features like comfortable seating, warm lighting, and peaceful decorating schemes, as well as an integration of the kitchen into other aspects of life; a nook to read, a place to do some work, a seat to unwind with your partner or have coffee with a friend, or the place where people first gather when invited to your home. 2022 called and the trends are in: kitchens are the new hearts of the home.
